In Memory of William J. O’Neill, Jr.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of William J. O’Neill Jr., co-founder of the William J. and Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation, who passed away peacefully at his home on June 1st at the age of 92. Our deepest condolences are extended to his family during this difficult time.

In 1987, Bill and his mother, Dorothy K. O’Neill, established the Foundation with a vision that was both simple and profound: to create a place where family members could come together to do meaningful and impactful work on behalf of others. Bill and his mother were committed to the idea that philanthropy could be more than charitable giving—it could be a vehicle for strengthening family bonds, cultivating shared values, and inspiring generations to work together in service of the common good.

That belief shaped not only the Foundation, but much of Bill’s life and thinking. He was deeply interested in understanding what makes families strong and resilient, serving as editor of Family: The First Imperative: A Symposium in Search of the Root Causes of Family Strength and Family Disintegration. Throughout his life, he championed the idea that strong families are the foundation of strong communities and that investing in both was among society’s most important responsibilities.

Bill never lost sight of a question that remained central to his approach to philanthropy: What difference are we making? He consistently challenged the Foundation to understand the impact of its grantmaking, believing that responsible stewardship required both generosity and accountability. He cared deeply about learning from nonprofit partners, understanding outcomes, and ensuring that the Foundation’s resources were creating a meaningful and lasting benefit for the communities it sought to serve.

Bill’s impact extended far beyond the Foundation. He was widely recognized for his philanthropic leadership, civic engagement, and dedication to the Greater Cleveland community. He approached every endeavor with intellectual curiosity, thoughtful stewardship, and a genuine belief in the potential of people working together to create positive change.

Today, the O’Neill family celebrates five generations, many of whom remain actively involved in the Foundation’s work. Since its founding, the Foundation has invested millions of dollars in nonprofit organizations and community initiatives, carrying forward the values and vision that Bill established. He understood that a family’s greatest legacy is not simply what it leaves behind, but the values it passes forward.

As we honor Bill’s memory, we remain committed to advancing the mission and values that were so important to him: supporting strong communities where families rise each morning with hope, live each day with purpose, and rest each night with peace.

We are deeply grateful for Bill’s vision, leadership, and example. His legacy lives on through the Foundation he helped create, the family he cherished, and the countless lives touched by his generosity and commitment to others.
